Beginner Blog SEO Tips – Help Google Find Your Blog.
So you are ready to create a blog… and you want to make sure your effort is rewarded by Google ranking your blog so that people can find it. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) can seem very confusing at first. That is why I want to give you a few beginner blog SEO tips to help you get started and headed in the right direction.
The Number One Blog SEO Tip…
The number one blog SEO tip is to blog EVERY DAY.
If you are just getting started, you are probably thinking that isn’t what you wanted to hear. Having to blog every day can seem intimidating. But this is truly the number one tip I can give you. By blogging every day you create a ton of content. The advantages of blogging every day are:
- Google likes to see constant fresh content on your blog, thus helping your ranking.
- You get lots of practice writing, and then you get better at writing. When you are better at writing you will attract a larger and larger audience.
- As people return to look at your blog (and you will start to get a following over time), your readers per day statistic will increase… and that will help you rank better.
- The more content you have in your blog will mean new visitors will probably spend more time looking around at what you have already written… and that longer time on your website statistic will also help you rank better.
- With more content you have more opportunity for back links (which we will cover later)… which will help you rank better.
- As you develop a mailing list, you have more content you can email them.
I am sure there are more advantages to writing every day, but those are the ones just off the top of my head.
Understand Your Audience
Who are you writing to?
Who are you trying to attract to your blog?
Get a really good picture of who your target audience is and what they are like. This is called creating your audience avatar. I need to write an entire blog post on this topic alone so I won’t spend too much time on it here. But the main takeaway is that you need to target your blog, and really your entire website, to a specific audience.
If you target everyone, you target no one.
That means that if you try to appeal to too large an audience then you really won’t appeal to anyone.
Once you understand your audience then you should write to them as if you are talking to them over coffee. Make it conversational as if you are talking to a friend of yours. This will take practice… so it is a good thing you are blogging every day, isn’t it? 😉
The reason this is one of our blog SEO tips is that you want to have people on your website as long as possible (reducing your bounce rate)… Google watches for that. So by appealing to an audience you will develop that all important following. And… Google also knows which of your readers are return visitors… hmmm… the more I think about it the more I think Google is kind’uv like Santa Clause… knowing if you are naughty or nice. Lol
Pick a Blog Niche
Now you need to focus on a particular subject for your blog.
Bren and I are focusing on the niche of motivation and making money online. Although we had a few blog posts off topic, we have since really honed in on our niche.
I won’t go into detail as to how to pick a niche… but the important of the niche not only falls under what I already said, “If you target everyone, you target no one”, but it will actually help you pick main keywords to focus on in your blog. Keywords are very important to any article on blog SEO tips.
The Most Popular of Blog SEO Tips: Pick Keywords
So much can be discussed for keyword research. It really is one of the cornerstones of SEO: any blog SEO tips article would be negligent to not talk about them.
But before talking about keywords… let me pause… and say I would not worry about keywords if you are just getting started blogging the very first time.
Ok, let me say that differently… I would not let keyword research prevent you from blogging right away if you are just getting started.
Blogging everyday, starting TODAY, is key to SEO…. refer to the very first tip.
Now that I got that off my chest, as you continue to blog you need to start focusing on some common keywords within your blog. An example might be “blog SEO tips”. That is the main keyword I used for this blog. Take a second and skim through this blog post and you can see how I injected it into the headers and text copy.
Before writing this blog post I used Google Adwords, like how I showed in article, How to Use a Keyword Tool Like Google Adwords, to pick this key word phrase. I also picked a couple other keywords and used them throughout the article.
Using Your Keywords
Now that you have your keyword phrase(s), you need to make sure they are roughly 1-2% of your total word count in the blog. If you have too few keywords, then Google will not recognize that the article as being actually about that keyword. If you use the keyword phrase too often (like 5% or more) then it is called “keyword stuffing” and you will be penalized for it. So you really need to strike that delicate balance.
Some other tips for using your keyword phase include using it:
- In the title.
- At least once in your H1, H2, and H3 headings.
- In the first and last sentence on your blog post.
- In the alt text for pictures.
- In the file name for your pictures BEFORE uploading them to your blog.
You also need to make sure that you have one keyword phrase bolded, one keyword phrase in italics, and one keyword phrase underlined.
I think now you realize why I say don’t worry about keywords until you have a few blog posts under your belt. It isn’t hard, but it is a lot to think about.
How Long Should the Blog Post Be?
Target between 600-1,000 words.
Well there are exceptions to the this rule, but for now lets target this word count. You should try for at least 600 words so Google is happy that there is content… it used to be that 500 words was sufficient but over the years Google changed their algorithms so that now you need 600-700 words to have a good chance of getting ranked.
Note that Google’s mission is to “end all search”, so it won’t view a very short blog post as any way to end someone’s search.
To Wrap Up These Blog SEO Tips
As you can see there is some technique behind blogging and getting ranked on Google. But really the number one technique is still you need to blog every day. If you blog every day then Google will reward you even if you don’t follow the rest of these tips… it may take longer but it will eventually happen.
In future posts I’ll cover how to create your Avatar and off-page SEO, and other blog SEO tips.
