Prospecting And Getting Customers on Facebook
When you’ve had a home-based business for a few years you end up on a lot of “the people you may know” Facebook lists of other network marketers.
With billions of Facebook users, I don’t think it’s going to stop anytime soon.
I can get upwards of 30-40 Facebook friend requests a day. And about half of the people who I connect with will send me a private message to say “Hello.”
Many are using Facebook messaging as a way to either sell a product/service or find a “special friend.”
What NOT To Do
Over time, I have collected a few as examples of both what not to do and what works well to start a conversation in a direct message for marketing or (special friend) purposes.
Let’s start with the ones that are looking for a special friend. It usually starts off with…
“Hi Dear, I was wondering if you would like to be my special friend”
They are usually from another country and many will attempt to call using the free international call feature on FB.-super annoying and a great way to get blocked. If they are using a lot of misspelled words, poor grammar or many recently added friends these are all are huge red flags. It probably part of a scam of some kind.
Automatic block for me.
And then there’s this one:
That’s just a weird way to start a conversation!
and then there’s the chain message:
“4:00am-10:00pm please read this.. Not joking.. God has seen you struggling with something. God says its over. A blessing is coming your way. If you believe in God send this message and please dont ignore it. You are being tested. GOD will fix two things (BIG) tonight in your favor. If you believe in God drop everything and pass it on. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. Send this to 15 kind friends in 20 Minutes”
Or I’ve had a few just post links to their opportunities right off the bat.

How to Prospect on Facebook Properly
Here are a few tips I’ve learned to screen friend requests on Facebook.
I no longer just click the accept button without checking their profile first. If they don’t have a lot of pictures or friends or the pictures look suspicious I don’t accept.
Easy enough for the “special friend” requests.
For those business people who are tempted to market by blasting a message or tagging people in a post for jerseys or shoes please consider the three following options for a long-term strategy that will build trust with your potential customers instead of making them feel alienated, annoyed and like you’ve invaded their privacy.
1) Provide VALUE
With Valuable social content, you can reach potential clients organically. Posting content that adds value for your audience such as informational or inspirational posts blogs and video will still reach a percentage of fans. The better the content, the more people it will reach. This builds good will and rapport.
2) Try Ads
They are a great compliment to a strong organic content strategy. Properly designed social media ads can help small businesses target specific types of consumers based on interests, demographics, locations, activity and more. Many small businesses have taken to social advertising to reach new customers and target an audience they couldn’t reach through organic means. There is a cost involved, but dollar-for-dollar, social media advertising is hard to beat and investments made this way will bear favorable short- and long-term result compared to blackhat techniques.
3) Approach People The Right Way
If you are using Facebook direct messaging as a prospecting technique
A simple, “Hi, how are you doing?” is a great way to start.
“Happy to connect with you.” will also suffice as an opening to a conversation.
And then we recommend you follow a simple script to qualify a potential client before you take the time to go any further.
Final Words on How to Prospect on Facebook
Possibly making a quick buck by hoping that there might be a percentage of people that you won’t annoy and alienate by your spammy marketing techniques is not the way to build a legacy and long-term real estate online.
Think of your online business as a business and have the integrity to treat your potential clients with the care and respect they deserve.
