Instagram is an amazing way of building a business using the internet.  It’s one of the best social media platforms if you’re trying to reach a national or worldwide audience.  What makes it even more attractive is that users on Instagram are more active than any other social media platform, but there are a lot more Instagram benefits.

Brand Yourself

When doing Instagram marketing for your business, you need to focus on branding your company.  For the most part, Instagram is all about images and what you post for images is essential to your overall brand.

Things you can post to instagram include

  • Inspirational quotes
  • Quick tips
  • Storyboards (pictures, or a collage of pictures, that have a message)
  • Video clips (that can have a call to action at the end to perform a task)
  • Business events
  • Pictures (some profession) of yourself and others to help give the image of who you and your team are.

The key is to give content that would be of interest to your target audience.  That includes content that is either:

  • Fun/funny
  • Entertaining
  • Inspirational
  • Teaching

 

Setup Your Bio

Let your bio do the selling.  I talk in depth about how to setup the bio for marketing in this blog post.

Posts Should Minimize Selling

The point of social media is to be social.

That means you need to keep any selling you do to a minimum in your posts.  A good rule of thumb is to do no more than 20% of your posts related to selling… ideally 10% or less.  Like I said in the previous section, “let your bio do the selling.”

Your Posts To Instagram

As I talk about in the video, once you get your Instagram account setup you need to post at least six pieces of content right away.  This content not only helps show people that your account is active, but it also helps prevent Instagram from shutting down a dormant account.

Post Regularly To Instagram

Now that you have your initial posts done, the question then becomes “how often to post to Instagram” to build your following.

At a bare minimum, you should try to post at least 3-4 times a week minimum.  Even better you should try to post once a day to get better user interaction, and attract more people to your Instagram account.

When you use a tool like iconosquare, you may find (after collecting a few months data) that there are several times a day you can post to get great follower interaction.  In that case you may want to consider multiple posts a day.

The key is to post regularly to Instagram to get best results.

Instagram is a powerful way to promote your business or services online. What makes it more attractive is that people on Instagram are more active than any other social media platform, but there are a lot more Instagram benefits.

Setting up your Instagram account as a lead generating machine can be a bit tricky without the right guidance.  I know because we had to learn a lot of what it takes to master Instagram by paying mentors, courses, and trial and error.

That’s why I want to talk about how to start marketing on Instagram.

Tip #1: Pick A Niche

The first step is to pick a niche for your Instagram account.

So why use niche for your Instagram account?  I like to use the analogy of a big superstore like Walmart vs. Autozone… if you were looking for specific information or parts for your car… which one would you choose?  Most likely you would choose Autozone because they would be more knowledgeable and would have the parts you are looking for.

Or if you were really interested in a raw food recipe would you look for a generic website on cooking or would you go looking for a raw food recipe website?  I think that answer is pretty obvious too.

I can go on and on with examples… the fact is that you will develop a stronger following if you use a more narrowly focused niche for your Instagram account than if you account is more broad.  With the recent updates to the Instagram account, you can now register a couple accounts on your phone and be able to bounce between them.  That means it is easier to manage multiple accounts that each focus on a specific niche.

At the time of writing this article, we have over twenty two different instagram accounts all focused on different niches.  Most businesses only need on Instagram account.

Tip #2: Choose Something to Promote

The next step is to choose something to… well sell.

The point of marketing online is to make money.  Now what you promote can be any number of things:

  • Professional services
  • Digital products
  • Physical products

If you don’t already have someone to promote, then I recommend starting off with digital products.  There are lots of digital products out there that you do not have to create, and can sell without having to worry about customer support, technical support, etc.

You can also choose physical products, but I recommend picking products where you don’t have to worry about inventory or shipping.  There are lots of affiliate products out there that you can promote.

The key is to make sure that what you promote is congruent with niche.

For example, if you have an Instagram account that focuses on Siamese cats, then it is best to sell cat related products and services.  If you start promoting something like… car parts, then you are not servicing your audience.

Tip #3: Narrow Down Your Target Audience

Talking about audience… the third and final thing to identify your target audience.

Getting to know your target audience is an important part of marketing.  Often the more narrow the focus the better.

This article talks about creating a target audience for a blog, but the process is identical for an Instagram account.
