I can remember my mom talking about a favorite evangelical preacher of hers when I was growing up. His name is Chuck Swindoll. He’s a pastor, author and radio preacher.
I remember her listening to “Insight for Living” radio program headquartered in Texas.
I didn’t appreciate the wisdom of this man when I was growing up but remembered the name when my girl crush, Marie Forleo, mentioned him in one of her videos.
He talks a lot about the benefits of a positive mental attitude.
The Power of a Positive Mental Attitude

We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people act in a certain way. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.
It is the one thing we do have control over. Things are going to happen in life. Situations we have no control over. But we do have control over how we perceive the situation.
Control Your Thoughts
Its best to control your thoughts as quickly as possible. Try not to talk about the situation with the person that hurt you right away.
Take some time to regroup.
Be careful who you talk to at all, because one thought leads to another thought and before you know it you will be thinking of all kinds of evidence to justify your hurt feelings and how many times you’ve been hurt in the past.
Make sure you talk to someone positive and someone you can trust.
The quicker you can start a flow of positive thoughts going through your head the quicker you stop the cycle of negative thoughts.
Grab the right end of the stick. Abraham-Hicks explain that every subject is really two subjects: the subject itself, and the absence of it. If you feel hurt by something someone does we have a choice to either focus on what they did and attract more of those same kinds of thoughts or we can choose to think a better feeling thought.
For example, if someone has a party and doesn’t invite you and you find out about it because she posted a bunch of pictures on Facebook you have a few options. You can be upset and angry, tell them your upset and even tell other people about how hurt you are.
You can do all this and think negative thoughts about this person…
or you can consciously remember all of the good times you’ve had with this person and every positive gesture and thoughtful thing that they’ve done. You can even make a list.
Talk It Out
Focus on this. It will take effort. You may need to talk to that person and explain how you feel, eventually, but only from a place of a positive mental attitude and positive thoughts about that person or you may find you don’t need to talk to them at all.
Final Word On Your Positive Mental Attitude
Think of any situation that comes up that causes a negative emotion as a seed of opportunity to practice the habit of a positive mental attitude muscle. The longer you live the more practice you get and before you know it your life will be a reflection of all of those positive thoughts.
